A scalloped bowl, painted by hand
Jamila is a round basin with a scalloped rim, painted freehand in the Fez medina and double-fired at 1,040°C until the glaze is non-porous. The curved bowl and petalled edge give it more presence than a straight-sided basin, on the same standard countertop vessel fitting.
What owners say once it is installed
Love the basin. It will look great in our new downstairs toilet.

The rim is what you notice first
A scalloped edge catches light differently all the way round, so the basin reads as an object rather than a fitting. The bowl curves inward from that rim, which keeps the footprint tight while the opening stays generous.
Look closer. The character is in the brushwork.
Three details worth zooming into before you decide, because they are what separate a hand-painted basin from a printed one.
The motif
Floral work drawn in a continuous rhythm around the bowl. Spacing and petal shape shift as the brush travels, which is what gives the pattern its hand-drawn movement.
The scalloped rim
A petalled edge cut into the lip rather than applied to it, so the scallops carry the same glaze and the same depth as the rest of the bowl.
The glaze
A mineral glaze fired into the clay body, giving colour that sits under the surface rather than on top of it. The fired surface is non-porous, so water runs off it rather than into it.
Made by hand. Fired by fire.
Jamila is produced in a working atelier in the Fez medina, where ceramic has been made the same way for generations. Four stages, each carried out by hand, each leaving a mark on the finished basin.
Thrown
The bowl is formed and the scallops are cut into the rim while the clay is still soft.
Painted
Floral motifs are applied freehand with fine-tipped brushes and mineral glazes. There is no pattern to trace.
Fired twice
A second firing at 1,040°C vitrifies the body and seals the glaze into a non-porous surface.
Inspected
Each basin is checked for glaze faults, chipped scallops and hairline cracks, then crated.
A decorative object with a working basin inside it
Four details decide whether a vessel sink is pleasant to live with. Here is how Jamila handles each one.
01 / Scalloped rim
A petalled edge, glazed smooth. It is cut into the lip, so there is no joint and nothing applied to catch or lift.
02 / Round bowl
The sides curve in toward the base rather than dropping straight, so water gathers toward the centre on its own.
03 / Painted interior
The decoration continues inside the bowl, so the pattern is visible from above rather than only in profile.
04 / Standard 1.75 inch outlet
A pre-ground flat base takes an ordinary vessel drain. Because a vessel has no overflow, choose a drain without an overflow slot.
Four things to check in your bathroom
A vessel sink sits on top of the counter rather than inside it, which changes three measurements. Five minutes now avoids a return later.
Counter depth
Measure front to back. Leave at least 2 inch of clear counter in front of the rim. The scallops sit slightly proud, so measure to the widest point of the rim, not the bowl.
Faucet height
A standard basin mixer will be too short. You need a tall vessel faucet or a wall spout, with the outlet clearing the rim and the reach landing water near the centre of the bowl.
Drain and trap
Standard 1.75 inch outlet, no overflow. Use a non-overflow pop-up or grid drain. The trap sits lower in the cabinet than with an undermount basin, so check the clearance below.
Working height
The basin adds its full height on top of your counter. On a standard 36 inch vanity that is comfortable for most adults. On a taller counter, measure before you commit.
Not sure your setup works? Send a photo of your vanity and faucet with the counter depth and we will confirm the fit before you order. No obligation.
Ask the atelierWhich Jamila fits your vanity?
Diameter is the decision, and it is measured across the scalloped rim at its widest. Leave at least 2 inch of clear counter in front of the rim and 3 inch on each side. If your counter is shallow, go one size down rather than squeezing the largest in.
| Diameter | Best for | Counter depth |
|---|---|---|
| 8 inch | Cloakroom or a narrow powder-room counter | 14 inch or more |
| 10 inch | Compact powder room, guest washroom | 16 inch or more |
| 12 inch | Standard single vanity, the most popular choice | 18 inch or more |
| 14 inch | Generous single vanity or a deeper counter | 20 inch or more |
| 16 inch | Statement vanity, master bathroom, hospitality | 22 inch or more |
Planning a double vanity? Matched pairs can be ordered together so both basins come from the same firing.
Three habits, and it stays as it arrived
The fired glaze is non-porous, so daily care is simple. The only real risk to a hand-painted surface is abrasion, not water.
Soft cloth, mild cleaner
A damp microfibre cloth and a pH-neutral bathroom cleaner is all it needs. Wipe along the scallops, not across them.
No scouring, no bleach
Abrasive pads, powder cleansers and bleach-based products can dull the glaze over time.
Rinse strong colours away
Hair dye, iodine and similar pigments should be rinsed off rather than left to sit.
The questions people actually ask
Installation first, delivery second.
Will standard US or European plumbing fit this sink?
Yes. Jamila has a pre-ground flat base with a standard 1.75 inch outlet, which is the common vessel-sink size in both the US and Europe. Any ordinary vessel pop-up or grid drain fits directly.
One thing to get right: a vessel basin has no overflow, so choose a drain without an overflow slot. A drain made for an overflow basin will leak if used here.
What faucet height and reach do I need?
Because the basin sits on top of the counter, a standard basin mixer will be too short. You need either a tall vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout. The spout outlet should clear the scalloped rim with room to wash your hands underneath, and the reach should land water near the centre of the bowl rather than against the back.
Send us your chosen faucet and vanity measurements and we will confirm the pairing before you order.
How do I measure for a scalloped rim?
Measure the diameter across the widest point of the rim, which is the outer edge of the scallops. That is the figure quoted in the size table, so you can compare it directly against your counter.
Allow 2 inch of clear counter in front and 3 inch at each side from that widest point, not from the bowl.
Does water drain freely from a round bowl?
Yes, and a little better than a straight-sided basin. The sides curve in toward the base, so water gathers toward the outlet rather than sitting at the edges. The base itself is ground flat with the outlet at the lowest point.
Are the scallops fragile?
They are cut into the rim while the clay is soft and fired as one piece, so there is no joint and nothing bonded on. The scallops are the same vitrified earthenware as the rest of the bowl and are no more vulnerable than the rim of a plain basin.
As with any ceramic, a hard knock from a dropped bottle can chip an edge, and the rim is the most exposed part.
Can I order a matched pair for a double vanity?
Yes. Order both basins together and tell us it is a pair, and we will select two from the same firing so the glaze tone matches as closely as handmade ceramic allows. Because each one is painted freehand, the linework will differ slightly between them.
Will my basin look exactly like the photographs?
It will be the same design, painted by hand rather than printed, so the linework and glaze tone will carry small differences. That is the nature of a freehand-painted piece, not a fault. If you would like to see your actual basin before it ships, ask and we will photograph it for you.
How is the ceramic protected in transit, and what if it arrives damaged?
Each basin ships in reinforced packaging with insured shipping. If the parcel arrives visibly damaged, photograph the outer packaging and the basin before unpacking further and contact us straight away. Transit damage is covered and we replace or refund at no cost to you, including return shipping.
How long does delivery take, and do I get tracking?
Standard insured delivery is free, with orders typically arriving within 10 to 14 days. You will receive shipment confirmation and tracking once the carrier collects the parcel. Tracking can take 24 to 72 hours to begin updating after the label is created.
Are customs duties and import taxes included?
Yes, for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union. Orders ship DDP, meaning duties, import tariffs and local clearance fees are prepaid. The price at checkout is the price you pay, with nothing collected on delivery.
Can I return it if I change my mind?
Yes, within 30 days of delivery. For a change-of-mind return we refund the purchase to your original payment method, less the applicable return costs, since the piece has to come back to us insured and crated.
If the basin is damaged, defective or not what you ordered, the return costs nothing and we cover the full amount. Full conditions are in our Refund & Returns policy.
